Mathematics
By the time children leave Radstock Primary School, in Mathematics they will be:
- Fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- Able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
Mathematics at Radstock Primary School is taught for 5 hours over the week from Year 1 to Year 6. In F1 and F2, maths is taught regularly in small groups with several opportunities to consolidate this learning. Mathematics is taught through a Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach, based on White Rose Mathematics.
Concrete |
Children are taught to understand the principles of number and simple mathematics using apparatus to support them |
||
Pictorial |
As they become confident with the apparatus, they are asked to represent the information in a pictorial format |
||
Abstract |
Once they are skilled at representing numbers in pictures, they move to an abstract approach using numbers only. |
All mathematics lessons at Radstock Primary School provide the children with the opportunity to explore mastery and reasoning problems in order for them to apply their learning. Children are also encouraged to recognise how these fundamental mathematical skills can support them in real-life situations.
For more information on how to support your child, please see our calculation policy, which will show you how to use the concrete, pictorial and abstract methods that we teach in school, to support your child's learning at home.
